The Barun Valley is part of huge international proctected area under an agreement between China and Nepal. The Makalu Barun National Park was established in 1992 as nepal's eight National park.

The park of 2330sq.km. is bordered by the Arun River in the east and the Sagarmatha National Park in the west. Barun Valley is a sanctuary for wild animals such as wolves, lynx, fox and the elusive snow leopard. Our descent into the pine and rhododendron forest from the Barun Valley takes us past the lower Barun Glacier and into the Makalu basin and to Tumlingtar to catch the flight back to Kathmandu.

The Makalu base camp trek does not require any special trekking permits but there is required Makalu/Arun national park fee, which costs only 1000 Nepalese rupees for one person for whole trip.

In this trek the first panoramic view point is Num and then khongma la, these two places are really wonderful panoramic view point of this route. You can see from here all round mountain views of the eastern part of Nepal and also the valley, river, villages, terrace lands for farming, settlement of many different castes peoples and local peoples houses etc view. And after passing Shitonla you will see very beautiful waterfall, river view, icefall, shiva shrine on the rock, several chortens and Deurali ( the special place where every year the local peoples worship two times) on the way.
